Spending-Cut Talk Ahead Of Election? Expect The Ax In '11

It's axiomatic: Politicians running for re-election never get specific when talking about spending cuts. It would open them to attack from opponents and interest groups and put their entire party on the defensive. Yet massive deficits and chronic long-term budget woes have created a political climate encouraging a few members of Congress — Republican and Democrat — to challenge that wisdom this year. Given that most politicians only muster up courage after Election Day, these early voices of restraint may foreshadow actual spending cuts next year.

Whoa! Republicans Haven't Won Yet

Let's not uncork the bubbly just yet. John Boehner better not be eyeing curtains for the Speaker's office. While all the signs point to substantial GOP gains in U.S. House and Senate contests this November, the fat lady hasn't sung. Two critical factors will determine if the GOP makes the sort of gains that give it control of the House and, possibly, the Senate. One is turnout. The other is a platform, which is the stuff of a mandate. Where is the GOP's platform? House Republicans have yet to announce a platform for the autumn campaign. That's not a good...

What's their plan?

Faced with a dismal political climate, Democrats appear ready to revive the hoary charge that Republicans seek to dismantle Social Security. But what's the Dems' answer? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has run TV ads attacking his opponent, Sharron Angle, for wanting "to wipe the program out." In Kentucky, Republican senatorial candidate Rand Paul is being criticized for remarks he made in favor of Social Security privatization -- in 1998. Several strategists are calling for Democratic candidates to tie their opponents to privatization efforts, including President George W. Bush's failed efforts to reform the troubled program. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi...

Paul Ryan says he’s trying to provide leadership for “decentralized” GOP

Rep. Paul Ryan, the fast-talking, number-crunching Republican from Wisconsin, caused a stir last week when he called out his own party for not offering Americans a substantive alternative to Democrats in this fall’s elections . “They’re talking to their pollsters and their pollsters are saying, ‘Stay away from this. We’re going to win an election,’” Ryan said, speaking at the liberal-leaning Brookings Institution . . . In an interview with The Daily Caller, Ryan said he was not trying to embarrass his party or his party’s leadership . . . The 40-year old Ryan is a rising young star in...

Contending with the 'never enough' crowd

William Voegeli has bad tidings for advocates of limited government and low taxes: There is no endgame when it comes to the liberal agenda. If tomorrow, liberals in Congress, state legislatures, and town councils all across the nation raised taxes and increased spending in order to fund every single item on every special-interest wish list, would social-justice nirvana have arrived? No. Within hours, some liberal would find an unmet need that only a new government program could address. It gets worse: Voegeli says that despite conservatives' good-faith efforts to halt or reverse the growth of government, those attempts have been...

Obama’s Crisis Is GOP’s Opportunity - Now is the time for the GOP to call Obama’s bluff and...

Obama’s Crisis Is GOP’s OpportunityNow is the time for the GOP to call Obama’s bluff and offer a real choice.  It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The Obama administration came into power with the political winds at its back, the media at its feet, and Americans open to major change. The White House even had a slogan: A crisis is a terrible thing to waste. The logic behind the axiom is unassailable. As Robert Higgs documented in his libertarian classic, Crisis and Leviathan, it’s crisis — not merely war — that is the health of the state. Crises melt frozen politics....
